Is decryption of confidential data at the end of SSL tunnel is done for routing purpose or done automatically by SSL tunnel itself?

Hi,

In transport layer security, the confidential data is encrypted at the sending end of SSL tunnel and decrypted at the receiving end of SSL tunnel in intermediary or other environment. Is this confidential data is decrypted for the purpose of routing or it is automatically by SSL tunnel?
