Push Notification Service - how to send raw data?

Hi,

how do I send JSON data (or any other raw data) in push notification?

Literally, hundreds of examples show how to send visual messages (eg. toast, tile) while I need to send *raw data*.

Example: links to news articles with some metadata like source, publish date and description to be processed by application and then displayed in a visual manner.

Probably I need specific payload formats for all the supported platforms.

Please help. I found no useful examples other than the post from 2012 stating this functionality was going to be provided very soon and was available for Windows Phone. Link attached below.
